Forests of Life is an inquiry-based programme that opens up an exciting pathway of discovery through the natural world.
Science for Life
Science for Life is a programme that builds on Forests of life. Phase 1 January 2008 to June 2009, revisited the underpinning research. These reports will be released soon (Oct 2009).
Phase II is developing case studies with schools on the effectiveness of Scion interventions. We are currently working with 4 schools, but are keen to work with other schools to help us develop case studies.
The vision
Science-4-Life will offer students the opportunity to immerse themselves in real science research programmes. Students and teachers will be encouraged to develop and pursue their own innovative science research linked to the national curriculum and supported by Scion.
Aims
The programme aims are:
- to create positive experiences for students in science.
- To engage students in authentic and contextual research projects.
- To energise science teaching and develop best practice models.
Pedagogy
Scion has moved away from the simple transfer of science knowledge from ‘experts’ to students, in favour of inquiry-based approaches in which teachers and students are actively encouraged to explore new and innovative research directions.
Programme approach
We will achieve our vision through:
- Inquiry models that accommodate students and teachers at levels appropriate to each school’s needs and experience.
- Immersion of teachers and students in current Scion research programmes.
- Integration of the science achievement objectives of the national curriculum with Scion research programmes.
- Mentoring of teachers and students online by scientists and inquiry specialists.
- Web enhanced.
- Use of appropriate ICT and educational tools.
- Provision of supporting online professional development programmes in inquiry-based learning and science method.
- Development and nurture of thinking skills.
- Creation of an online community of learning engaging teachers and scientists.
Developed and run by Scion, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute, Forests of Life and Science for Life is underpinned by educational research.
